Gosport Ice Show would not run without the help of volunteers. We
rely on them to help backstage; putting props on and off the
ice, getting skaters onto the ice on time, helping them get changed,
including quick changes, and not forgetting the people
who control the lights and music. The show involves many different
people, not just the skaters, but also people that have a great interest
in skating – the parents, grandparents and friends of the family, who
all volunteer their time to help the show go on over the 5 performances.
So to put faces to names, we proudly present our voluntary
team behind our years of success...
The Producer(s)
Our current producer is Barrie Dawson. Barrie took on the
role of producer in 2003 after the previous producer David
Elliot retired from the show team after many years of hard work
and massive effort. The producer is under the most pressure and
is the main person in charge of pretty much every aspect of the
show. Barrie works extremely hard and still maintains the
original concept behind the show; to provide the children and
people from the Gosport Ice Rink the opportunity to show their
talents in skating and performing to an audience. At the same
time keeping a strong show year after year for the public
audiences to keep coming back and to cover the costs of the
production.
The Choreographers
Many people have helped suggest ideas
to add to the content
of the show each year. The coaches behind the original shows;
Julia Parvin, Jane Falkner and Brian Cox helped make the show the
unforgettable experience it has been to both the skaters
involved and to the people in the audience. We have had many
experienced skaters involved over the years including: Sally Hayter, Jenny Axson,
Clare Barker and Andy Way. It
goes without saying that there are countless more skaters that
have added their own flare and personal choreography to various numbers
in the past.
2009's choreographers:
Julia Parvin
Julia is the longest serving member of
the Gosport coaching staff. She started skating when she was 5
years old and by the age of 7 was shown on a children's TV
program skating her program at Wembley Arena. She entered the
British Championships in both free skating and ice-dance and
then decided to start her coaching career. She coached at
Southampton until its closure. After a brief coaching spell at
Aldershot she came to Gosport to continue her career when the
ice-rink opened.
She has been involved in the
choreography and production of the Gosport Ice Shows since their
concept in the early nineties. Julia teaches a variety of ice
skating skills including free skating and ice dance. She enjoys
teaching all ages from five to seventy five!
Lesley Liggett
Lesley started skating at the age of 5 and hopes to get the hang of it
soon! As an amateur, she performed in many Ice Shows over
the years, comedy was always her favourite and gave her the most
fun. "It's great to hear the sound of an audience laughing, when
of course, they are supposed to!" This niche came much to the
initial shock horror of her then dance coach and later husband
Len Liggett; as elegance of performance was high on his list.
She
later went on to work with him and became a coach some 15 - 20
years ago and has been at Gosport for 5-6 years. Teaching a
wide range of ages skills and abilities there are no boundaries
as to what can be achieved but enjoyment is a must. 2007 has
been an extremely good year for her at Gosport, and she has been
fortunate enough to see skaters young and not so young who have
been brave enough to allow her to choreograph artistic and comedy
numbers for them to achieve great success, both in local and
open competitions, and she look forward to another great year at
Gosport in 2008.
Paul Crocker
Paul has been involved in skating since 1993, He is now a
Gold Standard Skater, and has recently been awarded a level 2
coaching certification and is enjoying coaching as a
professional immensely! Paul has choreographed show numbers and
group artistic pieces for Club and national competitions, and
has been involved in most of the 9 National Team Challenge small
group artistic competitions. Paul devised a new Club
competition to help skaters learn how to interpret music. Paul's
greatest achievements to date include winning a Gold medal for
England in the Inter-Continental International NISA Cup
competition in 2006 and a winning a Gold medal in the British
Adult Championships 2009 in the Masters category.
Clare Barker
Clare has been involved with the club for many
years. She has been an active skater in many shows and is now
training to be a coach. More recently she's enjoyed success
helping to coach the Gosport All Stars, Ice Stars and Falling
Stars alongside Sally Hayter and Jenny Axon. She also helps with
artistics and has great ideas for show numbers. Clare adds the
fun when there is fun needed!

The Skaters
Across the whole age and skill range, every skater adds their
own part to our show. Every show is unique from the last and it
is down to each individual skater involved. From adding their
own skills to being a role model for the younger generation,
each skater learns to show good character and examples of peer
behaviour. The skills they have all learnt, not only on the ice
but in the self-improvement to their personalities, stands them
in good stead for the future. Every skater works extremely hard
as a team and as individuals to come together as a team and make
the show as special as it is year after year.
